So what’s the big deal with High blood pressure? Why do medical professionals make such a big deal out of it when you feel fine? Hypertension (high blood pressure) is typically not a problem on its own, but over time, hypertension can increase the risk for other health emergencies — for example, heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. Long-term high blood pressure can damage blood vessels all over your body.
What do we do about it? There are lots of medications that can be used to treat hypertension, but there is no pill that can replace a healthy lifestyle! Here are some lifestyle changes that have been proven to help lower hypertension:
- losing weight (if you are overweight)
- eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables
- avoiding excess sodium
- exercising for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week
- cutting back on alcohol, and lowering your stress.
